Director of Communications for non profit

AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY

Leadership
• Recruit, retain, and motivate a high-performing staff to advance our ambitious mission
• Oversee the team’s work in the following areas, with hands-on execution for some,
sponsorship for others, and overall leadership for all:

Communications Strategy
• Work with staff leadership and the boards to develop and maintain a communications strategy that supports the goals of the organization’s strategic plan
• Determine the organization’s brand identity and where to differentiate between us and the Standards Board
• Evaluating and hone the strength and effectiveness of our value proposition for key segments (investors, accountants, CEOs, CFOs and financial reporting executives, sustainability professionals, policy makers, etc.)
• Educate the staff about the plan and the key messages they should emphasize to support the strategy
Communication Channels
• Oversee our owned, earned, paid, and shared communication channels: press, website, conferences and public appearances, publications, social media, public notices, etc.
• Meet regularly with leaders across the organization to surface, preview, and coordinate messaging opportunities in ways that contextualize and strengthen messaging and increase impact
• Identify, develop, coach, support, and promote brand ambassadors to amplify our message in key forums and venues, including among board members, staff leadership, and external advisors
• Support outreach to and monitoring of relationships with key stakeholder organizations
Presentations, Publications, and Communications Materials
• Manage preparation of speeches, remarks, and presentations for board members and senior staff
• Ensure staff and all members of each board can communicate our messaging powerfully and in a consistent voice
• Ensure that communications materials are updated, compelling, and consistent
• Assist with stakeholder inquiries and responses, including crisis management
• Ensure production and presentation of regular outbound communications and publications

Media Relations
• Develop media strategies, monitoring placement and effectiveness of coverage and
campaigns
• Select, manage, and evaluate agencies and/or consultants
• Manage and respond to inbound inquiries and track and respond to unsolicited coverage
• Serve as spokesperson for us, when warranted, and leverage others (staff,
Board members) to maximize the impact of our messaging

QUALIFICATIONS
Experience
• 10+ years of relevant experience, preferably with two or more years in an agency
environment
• Knowledge of capital markets and the relevant “players” and their motivations (investors,
companies, regulatory agencies); experience shaping messaging to/for these players
• Experience promoting business- and investor-focused clients to the media
• Experience editing and placing content in technical publications related to business,
investing, accounting, and/or law
• Experience working with C-level clients for strategy, promotion, and placement
• Experience leading a communications team serving multiple groups across an enterprise
• Experience navigating the challenges of growth: improving a team’s ability to improve the
quality of communications while responding to the increased quantity of communications that success brings

• Comfort in a fast-moving environment, with changes in scope and direction of initiatives
• Bachelor’s degree or higher (preferred) in a communication-focused field such as
Business, Marketing, Communications, Public Relations, Journalism, or related discipline
